The pearl is a fantastic gift of living nature and is not mined in the Earth's bowels but at the bottom of large bodies of water (oceans and seas). It has been used by people for several millennia and is revered as the most unusual jewel.
Description of pearls:
Color. Pearls can be white, silver, cream, pink, green, yellowish, golden, blue, and black. Their color depends on many factors, but their maturity, measured in microns, is of decisive importance in this question.
Place of mining. Bivalve mollusks, from whose shells pearls are obtained, form colonies and live in shallow warm seas at a depth of 5 to 40 m.The main production of a natural pearl is carried out in the Manara and Persian Gulfs, off the coast of the Sri Lanka island, in the Red Sea. River pearls are mined in the clean rivers of Russia, Germany, China, and North America.
Its appearance is the result of a protective reaction of the mollusk to any stimulus (pebble, grain of sand, a fragment of a shell) that has penetrated from the outside. In an effort to get rid of the irritant, a mollusk begins to produce nacre intensively and gradually, layer by layer, envelops a foreign body with it. After a while, a pearl appears in this place.
Gemologists classify pearls into:
Freshwater. This type of pearl, appearing only in one shell out of a thousand, has an uneven surface, grayish color, small size, and poor luster. The cost of river pearls is low.
Saltwater. Pearls found in the sea and oceans are characterized by their large size, smooth surface, and bright mother-of-pearl luster. They are most often painted white or pink. Pearls of blue, black, yellow, and light shades are much less common. Deposits of this type are divided into:
South Sea Pearls
Sea of Cortez Pearls.
As a rule, cultured pearls are used in those pearl jewelry that is offered by the jewelry industry now. It is grown with human participation. The fact is that the traditional extraction method provoked the mass death of mollusks and caused enormous harm to the natural environment. Therefore it was prohibited in 1952.
It is evaluated according to the same criteria as natural - color, gloss, size, shape, and surface finish. This type of pearl is very often used as an insert in jewelry: pendants, earrings, rings, tiaras, and necklaces. Most often, they are set in gold (yellow and white), a little less often in platinum.
How to determine a real pearl from a fake one?
People have been engaged in counterfeiting natural pearls for many centuries. In the 15th century, "roman" pearls were very popular - glass beads filled with paraffin. To this day, Chinese craftsmen cover glass beads with "pearl essence" - an extract of the scales of sea fish, which has a strong mother-of-pearl luster. The shell pearl technology, which appeared in America in the 20th century, consisted of turning beads from the thick part of mother-of-pearl shells and then applying a thick layer of varnish to them.
In order not to buy stone from scammers, you should remember that natural pearls:
Have holes with perfectly straight edges. Fake stones will always have bumps and chips around the holes.
Have a bigger mass than artificial ones. The specific gravity of natural pearls is considered to be 2.68-2.78 grains.
Have a uniform deep shine, regardless of the angle at which the light falls on them. A dull surface is a sign of a fake.
Have a high price. Each pearl has its own value based on size, shape, surface quality, luster, and origin. However, if you see a too low price, then they are trying to sell you a fake.
Remain cold even in a warm room. At the same time, counterfeits quickly take on ambient temperatures.
Have a scaly surface that is visible under a microscope. Fake copies have, on the contrary, a smooth one.
When exposed to an electromagnetic field, they will remain stationary. Imitation pearls may start to roll.
